Today you will begin your research into your audience. We will recap:
The PowerPoint for today's lesson and the C4 research summary document: In today's lesson, you will research some questions regarding copyright and suggest how you will communicate with the artist to ensure that you have sought copyright permission.
The following are links that may assist you to answer the questions. Additionally there are links to some interesting articles about more recent instances of changes in copyright law. Peer-2-peer File Sharinghttp://www.teachingcopyright.org/curriculum/hs/4 Copyright service law page http://www.copyrightservice.co.uk/copyright/p01_uk_copyright_law 10 Copyright myths http://www.copyrightservice.co.uk/copyright/copyright_myths Fair use Rules http://www.copyrightservice.co.uk/copyright/p09_fair_use Copyright linked to music http://www.prsformusic.com/aboutus/essentialinformation/aboutcopyright/Pages/aboutmusiccopyright.aspx The PowerPoint from today's lesson; we will work on this for the next two days! Make sure EVERYTHING else is up to date! "...a star is both ordinary and extraordinary." and "...a star is both present and absent." Richard Dyer is a media theorist and in his 1979 book 'Stars' he discusses star image and the construction of the star as artificial and created, and that individual stars develop their own unique selling point.
Dyer suggests that there are two paradoxes (things that contradict themselves). He suggested that there are two contrary representations. "...a star is both ordinary and extraordinary.". The star needs to be like us (the audience and regular people) and yet possess something we do not have which makes them special. "...a star is both present and absent.". They exist and are a part of our lives in the fact that we discuss them socially, may adopt our style from them, construct our identity and they may dictate some of our consumer habits. But they are also absent; out of reach and not actually there. We complete the star image, Dyer suggests, through consuming their products such as shows, merchandise etc... The following link goes into the theory in more detail and is worth a read; the page has been designed for ease of use by students. Metanarrative is referred to. In a basic way this means the story beyond the story; so the things beyond the music; the whole story of the star and everything they represent. http://blogs.grammar.sch.gg/a2media/files/2013/10/Richard-Dyer-Paradox-of-the-Star-1s9gq0n.pdf Link this with your star image exploration! Reference: Dyer, R (1979). Stars. London: BFI Publishing This lesson will be focused on how artists create a motif and an image to establish themselves as an individual. You will need to investigate artists who do this, trying to explain why (how do these things target an audience?). You need to; • Explain what star image and star motif means. • Choose an artist (you may do more than one) and piece together their star image and motif explaining; – What is says about that artist; what image are they trying to project to fans? – How is that image evident in their videos, album covers etc… • Link the research to why it is useful information and relevant to the creation of your OWN music video.
