We look forward to seeing you in September and hope you’ve enjoyed the taster sessions from your induction day!
I will be expecting you to complete homework over the summer, which includes reading and a bit of analysis. If you are new to media studies, that it ok! You still need to have a go as seeing how you write is just as important as what you know. You will be expected to produce coursework online, so communication is paramount to being seen as a mature and capable student.
Answer the following question.
How is the Horror genre represented in the clip, through the use camerawork, editing, sound and/or mise-en-scene?
I have provided you with a detailed hand-out on cinematography (camerawork) and will expect to see that in your analysis. However, if you also understand the other key terms, or wish to research and attempt them, then that would demonstrate your broader knowledge. This hand-out is not available online for free. Please look after it!
I would LOVE to see screen clippings on the camerawork you are analysing.
The reason for this task is to indicate a number of things to your new Media teachers, which include;

The reason for this task is to indicate a number of things to your new Media teachers, which include;
- Checking your understanding of media terminology and how you can apply this knowledge to tthe clip you have been given.
- Checking your English writing skills (spelling, punctuation, grammar and ability to write in full sentences) and seeing how effectively you can communicate your thoughts. Remember that your coursework relies on you maintaining a blog and website so you need to communicate effectively as well as your exam work needing to communicate your ideas effectively.
- Ensuring that you are committed to the course and dedicated enough to your studies to produce and hand-in a piece of homework to contribute to your future studies.
Example using a different clip from the same film:
How is the Horror genre represented in the clip, through the use camerawork, editing, sound and/or mise-en-scene?
In this part of the clip, Daniel Radcliff’s character ‘Arthur Kipps’ is seen in a medium shot which helps to establish his character’s reaction and the mise-en-scene. The low angle allows the audience to look up at him; his eye line is looking upwards and his facial expression looks shocked as though he has seen something. The next cut jumps straight to a low angle looking up at a ghostly face appearing in a window, but the audience do not know this so the facial expression helps to establish his fear. It fits in with the horror genre because shots are often used to show an emotional response, and frequently in horror you seen the face of a victim or the main character looking afraid or shocked which builds tension for the audience who fearfully anticipate the next cut where they will see what is frightening the character.
The mise-en-scene in this shot is also quite dark with low key lighting. He looks isolated, out in the wilderness because the only setting shows tangled hedges and a dark sky. This is juxtaposed with the formal and neat suit that he is wearing, making it feel like the character is out of their usual comfort zone. The dark mise-en-scene is conventional for horror genre films because it establishes the dark and sinister narrative and helps to create a sense of fear and gloom that is associated with the genre.
Do not worry if you feel you cannot write as confidently as I have above. The important thing is that you clearly tell me:
· What you can see (try to use terminology accurately);
· How it makes the audience feel;
· How it fits with a normal horror genre film.
